How Video Games Benefit You

As more and more people pick up the controller and learn about video games it is important to address an important aspect of video games. The AARP has reported that 44% of people over 50 have played a video game at least once a month in 2019. There are many ways in which video games benefit us from increasing our cognitive abilities and preventing brain related diseases to increasing physical dexterity in our hands. It is time we give up in thinking that video games are "a waste of time" or that we should "Go play outside instead". Many of us have grown up hearing those very same words spoken again and again to us. Teens and children are still being told the same old lines today as in the past whether that be harsh limits put on playing video games or the parents showing that they disapprove of the hobby.

We know now that this is not true and is outright misleading as video games have been shown to benefit us in many ways. From increasing certain regions of the brain to helping prevent degenerative diseases of the brain video games are helpful in many exciting ways.

1.)Improves Coordination-Many games are not static and uneventful like watching a movie. Gaming is very much an active experience. Many games require intense focus and while maintaining focus also coordinating hand and eye movement to the right portions of the screen and right position of the hands. This is an active process that improves muscle memory over time which increases the skill level of the gamer over time. Those who are in esports organizations practice active training where they focus on their movements but they also have built in great muscle memory which improves their coordination visually and physically.

2.)Improves Social Interaction- Video Games are far from an anti-social activity like many assume. Gamers know for a fact just how much social interaction is required for a game to go correctly and for their team to win. Many games are multiplayer which means they involve real life people battling each other, for example Counter Strike Global Offensive. CSGO is an action game that pins terrorists against anti-terrorists. In this game the team must coordinate itself accordingly to kill off the enemy team. This involves the proper use of smoke grenades, Grenades, Choke points, Tactics, and skill. Your team must be able to see the enemy before he or she sees you. Or you must be able to react quickly enough to enemy movement. This involves a lot of planning which means social interaction and team speak with other players. Players must coordinate each other and which equipment to buy each round for themselves so that they don't run out of money.

Many games also require social interaction and gaming is very beneficial in connecting players from all countries and cultures. You can easily be playing with someone across the world who has never stepped foot in your country. World of Warcraft is another great example of a game that involves social interaction. Groups must plan raids together and must communicate with each other to be successful.

3.)Enhances Memory- Many video games require a good memory and require the player to remember things that are said in the game or that the player experiences for later on in the game. whether that is to solve a later puzzle or to know what to do, what the requirements are of the quest or what ingredients are needed to craft a certain item. Gaming is full of things that must be remembered. Many gamers keep a gaming journal just for this very reason to write down certain things that will be useful later on. Gaming actively uses your memory and improves it in the process as having to rely on your memory so much benefits you long term.

4.)Improves Focus- Gaming is a very focus intensive hobby and games such as action games are in real time and require split second decisions. Gaming improves focus as the more you have to focus the better you get at it.

5.)Science says it is beneficial. Many medical studies have been done on gamers and have concluded that gaming has many, many benefits. A 2007 study found that medical students in residency did better at surgery if they played video games. Surgeons who played more then three hours a week had 37% fewer errors and were 27% faster. Science has also shown that gaming is helpful for those who have Parkinson's disease as it improves coordination and movement.

Gaming is able to help us and society in many ways and it is time that we stopped thinking of it as a wasteful hobby and instead embraced it on the same level as say reading a book.

Is Gaming A Cheap Hobby?

Playing video games is one of the best experiences you can have in life and just like reading a book it allows you to enter and explore fantastic open worlds but many good things in life aren't free unfortunately and while not entirely free video games are cheaper then ever and this leads us to ask is gaming a cheap hobby to have?
