There are Extra A+++ difficult games that are super hard to the point of being unfair and there are games that are difficult but fair in their difficulty. If a gamer decides to put in the effort to beat it he will be able to. I’ll be talking about the second one as some of my favorite games fall into the difficult genre.
Why do I skip the first type of difficult games. Well because they are made off artificial difficulty. That is a lot of these games where made in a time where the limitations of their hardware memory storage deemed that the only way to make a long experience was to crank up the difficulty. People would obviously feel cheated out of their money if they payed what is in today’s money $100–120 for a game and it was a 5–10 hour experience. So developers did what they could to prolong the length of the game. These games include Ghosts n’ Goblins, BattleToads, and Ninja Gaiden. I understand why developers did what they did but in today’s age when we have an unbelievable assortment of games to choose from you could do much better with choosing a insanely difficult game that will take you just as long and probably much longer to complete and has real difficulty that is based on your skill.
1.Binding of Isaac: Rebirth: I cannot make a list of the most difficult games without listing my personal favorite. This is a game that has become a cult classic among it’s fans. It is a zelda-like dungeon crawler where you shoot tears out of your eyes to destroy the dungeon’s monsters and finally kill the person that sent you down into the dungeon. It is gruesome, rebellious, foul, good stuff that while can cause a heated debate sometimes about the topics it presents, it is all in good fun and has top notch gameplay that is unparalleled to anything you can find I guarantee you.
2.FTL: In this game you are a commander of a space ship. You have to take command and help your spaceship escape from a powerful battleship that is chasing you and getting closer every turn you make if you are not careful. This game is a lot of fun and is a roguelike with permadeath, randomized levels, and turn based strategy. It is a lot of fun and many players boost of playing hundreds of hours. Some of the difficulty is RNG but the top players are able to perform at a level that to me says that if you have enough experience you will be able to beat it.
3.Risk of Rain: This is another of my favorites and in this game your space freighter that is carrying you to another planet crashes and all the cargo breaks open as you land on the planet. You must defend yourself against aliens and other creatures which you must defeat. This is a roguelike platformer that incorporates Metroidvania elements within it’s world. You advance through each level by picking up upgrades which help you become stronger and change your playstyle dramatically. You will need to know which upgrade to take, which is stronger, which is going to be more effective to the build you currently have. As the timer keeps going the difficulty keeps increasing every 5 minutes up to 10 levels of difficulty. Your goal is to find the teleporter and once you do you hit it and you will fight a boss and other creatures. After the fight all the money that was unspent in the game is destroyed as you will teleport to a new terrain and level and start all over again with a new environment, new patterns to learn and new bosses to face.
I was going to include Super Meat Boy on this list but that game is to much of a pixel perfect platformer to make the list. If you land on a spike you are dead. It is very much an insanely difficult game but I feel like it borrows more from the first example then the second. You simply have to memorize and incorporate within your muscle memory how to do each level. It is just a time sink. Though it can be really fun and those that have beat it have truly accomplished something great.
